Network monitoring system were developed to play an important role in providing remote access which is now an important feature in modern day networks. The system has a role of device management, configuration, network security, and alarm and faults management. Network monitoring system are installed in network operation centre manned by first level staff to observe network changes through events, happening in the network with the goal of providing an alarm free network which operates within the threshold set by international telecommunication union (ITU). The new features of service monitoring are coming on board will incorporates the addition of performance module and develop a system which is capable of adding third party module to manage third party networks. The most important aim of developing this unified monitoring system is to reduce cost which are related to license costs. The costs of licences is too high reaching to 10% of total revenue generated annually and costs can reduced by developing simple SNMP monitoring system which works the same as vendor proprietary systems which are currently available. The vendor systems are settle in foreign currency which is limited supply and the implementation of this solution will save the foreign currency component if this proposed solution is adopted by local operators. The proposed network monitoring system in this thesis, solves the problem of device monitoring and included features which are present in all the systems. The system was improved to monitor all vendor network elements unlike vendor specific solutions. Therefore, the advantages of this system, is the ability of being used by first level users who have minimum knowledge. According to the points submitted throughout this thesis, this designed application could be used for access, core, and IP and transmission equipment. The NMS was further developed to monitor third party equipment as the network are evolving user requirements are changing. Lastly, the system was developed future proof to easily interoperate with other future solutions which are coming like software defined network (SDN) and network cloud engine (NCE).en_ZW
