    Abstract
In this paper the university is understood as a culture. Following the definition of Heringer’s (2004) definition of culture, the academic culture is described in terms of potential, performance and manifestation. This description opens up research areas for students and teachers alike and will result in a holistic way of teaching and researching. The paper points out that teaching a foreign language with the goal of intercultural competence leads to personal development of the student.
