dc.description.abstract | The Zambian side of the Lake Kariba fishery has been characterised by a near 'open access' regime. Fishers have set-up settlements anywhere on the fishery and in most cases did not observe fishing regulations in force. Policies are now being implemented to make fishing communities become part of the decision-making processes on the fishery. It is envisaged that through co-management, fishers will appreciate the need to utilize the fishery sustainably thereby improving their livelihoods. The paper looks at the reasons that gave rise to co-management on the fishery and problems and conflicts that are now arising in its implementation. | |
