This is the second in the series of University of Zimbabwe Public Lectures inaugurated last year by the Prime Minister, the Honourable Comrade Robert G. Mugabe. We feel greatly honoured by your presence tonight, Comrade Prime Minister. It is with great pleasure and pride that I introduce Professor Sir Roy Marshall, our distinguished guest speaker, on the occasion that marks the beginning of two important events in the history of our university as well as our region. Tomorrow the University will be honouring the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe. For three days, starting on Monday, fourteen Vice-Chancellors from eastern and southern Africa, excluding the Republic of South Africa, will be locked up, at this place, in serious discussions on regional cooperation among their universities. Since the Vice-Chancellors’ workshop is going to make momentous decisions which hopefully are going to institute new and lasting patterns of relationships among their institutions of higher learning and among the peoples they serve, future generations will indeed see Sir Roy’s address tonight as having heralded a new era in our region.
