Lived experiences and coping strategies of children living with cancer in Mbare, Harare.

Abstract

This study focuses on the lived experiences and coping strategies of children living with cancer in Harare. To gather data, the qualitative methodology approach was used which adopted the use of in-depth interviews and focus group discussions as data gathering methods. The study makes use of Heidegger’s theory of hermeneutic phenomenology in examining the lived experiences and coping strategies of children living with cancer. The study discussed the lived experiences of children living with cancer, the challenges faced by children living with cancer and also the coping strategies employed by children living with cancer. Findings from the study were that children living with cancer experience a new phase of life different from the normal lives they are used to, a life of discrimination and physical changes in their bodies which they find difficult to cope with. The expensive nature of medicines and the scarcity of cancer medication was also highlighted as part of the experiences faced by these children. To cope with cancer, the children interviewed highlighted issues to do with medical treatments and also traditional ways of dealing with cancer.
