In this paper the university is understood as a culture. Following the definition of Heringer’s&#13;
(2004) definition of culture, the academic culture is described in terms of potential,&#13;
performance and manifestation. This description opens up research areas for students and&#13;
teachers alike and will result in a holistic way of teaching and researching. The paper points&#13;
out that teaching a foreign language with the goal of intercultural competence leads to&#13;
personal development of the student.
